Infectious diseases, like COVID-19, are caused by organisms like bacteria, viruses, or fungi.

We all live with these small organisms on and inside our body. Sometimes these are helpful, like our gut bacteria helps us digest food. But some of them can be harmful to us and cause diseases like HIV, common cold, and malaria.

Hepatitis B, which is caused by a virus, affects 2 billion people worldwide. Hepatitis B can spread from person to person through blood, semen, or other body fluids. It affects the liver and is preventable with vaccination.

British Doctor, Edward Jenner, used a mild cowpox virus to help create immunity against smallpox. This idea came to him when he realized that the milkmaids and milkmen were immune to smallpox.

When you get a fever or a cold, your body is protecting you against the disease. These symptoms mean that you have a healthy immune system! You may experience these symptoms when you get vaccinated as well - and one again it is your immune system doing its job to learn how to respond to the disease.

5 Ways to stay safe and healthy

Wash your Hands

There are a lot of small organisms and germs we carry with us everywhere. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds to avoid getting sick from infectious germs. Scrub the front and back of each hand and between fingers. Keep track of the time by singing the "Happy Birthday" song twice.

When you are Sick, Stay Home

If you have any symptoms of an infectious disease, like fever, cold, cough, etc., stay home. You can spread germs when you interact with others, so by staying home not only are you resting but you are protecting others!

Eat 3 Well-Rounded Meals

You should eat 3 meals everyday that have enough nutrients. This will help all the cells in your body stay healthy, including your immune cells. Healthy immune cells are very important to protect you against infectious diseases.

Drink a lot of Water!

You should drink at least 8 glasses of water every day. Water helps transport important nutrients between cells in our body. This is very important as it helps us remove waste from our body and remain clean on the inside! You should drink boiled or filtered water whenever you can, to avoid intake of contaminants.

Rinse all your food under running water before cooking or eating

Like your hands, your food can also carry harmful organisms. Before you eat your meat, poultry, fish, fruits, or vegetables, you should wash them thoroughly under tap water. This can help remove microbes from your food before you cook or eat it.
